How to choose a Southern New Hampshire Newborn Photographer
Choosing the right newborn photographer is an important decision for new parents looking to capture the fleeting moments of their baby’s earliest days. There are a lot of photographers out there- but no two are exactly alike. Start your search and you’ll soon realize photographers offer a range of styles, packages, and experiences. It can quickly become overwhelming to know where to start. In this post, I’ll guide you through the key factors to consider—from safety and experience to artistic style and budget—so you can feel confident selecting a photographer who will preserve these precious memories with care and creativity.
Know what Style you are looking for
I’m going to break this down into two parts: shooting style and editing style. When it comes to shooting style there are two main categories: studio/posed and lifestyle.
Studio newborn photography typically takes place in a controlled environment where lighting, props, and backdrops are carefully selected and arranged to create polished, posed images. These sessions often feature the baby in curled-up, sleepy poses using blankets, baskets, and accessories, resulting in polished and artistic portraits.
Lifestyle newborn photography, on the other hand, is more relaxed and natural, usually done in the family’s home. These sessions focus on capturing candid moments and genuine interactions between the baby and family members in their everyday environment, telling a more personal and emotive story.
Editing style varies from one photographer to the next, and one photographer’s style will often change over time as their skills, artistic vision, and preferences grow and shift. This evolution is a natural part of the creative journey and often reflects both personal growth and a deeper understanding of storytelling through imagery. When selecting a photographer be sure to look through their galleries and social media to ensure that the style they are currently offering matches what you are looking for.
Cost and What comes included?
The cost of a newborn photography session can vary widely depending on the photographer’s experience, location, and what’s included in the package, but it’s a meaningful investment. While it may seem like a splurge (and don’t get me wrong- photography is a luxury item), you're paying for more than just a few pictures—you're investing in a professional who understands how to safely pose and handle newborns, use high-quality equipment, and create lasting, beautiful images. These fleeting early moments pass quickly, and professionally captured photos offer timeless memories that families can treasure for generations.
When choosing a newborn photographer, it’s important to consider the products and collections they offer. Each photographer structures their packages differently—some may provide digital files only, while others (like me!) include printed artwork, albums, or framed wall art. Understanding what’s included in each collection helps ensure you receive the types of keepsakes that matter most to your family.
Safety and knowledge
You can and should ask your photographer what type of training and experience they have when it comes to handling newborns. As a NICU nurse, I know that newborn safety is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a photographer. Your photographer needs to understand how to handle and pose babies gently and securely, always prioritizing the baby's comfort and well-being. This includes knowing which poses are safe, how to properly support a baby's delicate body, and how to work in a warm, clean environment. Many professional photographers invest in specialized training to ensure they follow best practices for newborn safety. Choosing someone with experience and proper education gives parents peace of mind and ensures a safe, stress-free session. That being said please know that there is NOT an “official” newborn photography safety course or certificate so please be wary of any photographer claiming to have obtained such a thing.
Choosing the right newborn photographer involves more than just liking their photos—it’s about finding someone whose style, experience, and approach align with your vision and values. From deciding between studio and lifestyle sessions to understanding the significance of editing styles, product offerings, pricing, and above all, newborn safety, there are many important factors to consider. Taking the time to research and connect with a photographer who makes you feel comfortable and confident will ensure that this once-in-a-lifetime experience is beautifully and safely captured. These early days are fleeting, but the images will last a lifetime.
