I’m going to break this down into two parts: shooting style and editing style. When it comes to shooting style there are two main categories: studio/posed and lifestyle.

These sessions often feature the baby in curled-up, sleepy poses using blankets, baskets, and accessories, resulting in polished and artistic portraits.

While it may seem like a splurge (and don’t get me wrong- photography is a luxury item), you're paying for more than just a few pictures—you're investing in a professional who understands how to safely pose and handle newborns, use high-quality equipment, and create lasting, beautiful images. These fleeting early moments pass quickly, and professionally captured photos offer timeless memories that families can treasure for generations.

You can and should ask your photographer what type of training and experience they have when it comes to handling newborns. As a NICU nurse, I know that newborn safety is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a photographer. Your photographer needs to understand how to handle and pose babies gently and securely, always prioritizing the baby's comfort and well-being. This includes knowing which poses are safe, how to properly support a baby's delicate body, and how to work in a warm, clean environment. Many professional photographers invest in specialized training to ensure they follow best practices for newborn safety. Choosing someone with experience and proper education gives parents peace of mind and ensures a safe, stress-free session. That being said please know that there is NOT an “official” newborn photography safety course or certificate so please be wary of any photographer claiming to have obtained such a thing.
